Kevin "Jersey" Peters and Lynn "The Real Doc" Judd have both been honored with "Lifetime Achievement" awards at previous Desert Classics. They have been a great example of how to represent yourself at a Desert Classic.
Jimmy "Cooz" Cusack & Steve "Junior" Hunter are longtime Desert Classic players and captains. Cooz has played in all, but 2 Desert Classic's and Junior missed only a handful. Junior was the winner of the Gerry Layo MVP Award in 2020, helping secure a narrow victory of Team Burgandy. Both have won the tournament, but Cooz's win in the controversial 2000 Classic in Las Vegas was the end of the "big money" era. This was when the Desert Classic was a two-man team event and the top prize money was $20k. Cooz & Taro took home the Cactus Cup and cash despite many protests. The controversy was due to the last round being cut short due to lack of daylight and the tournament being decide based on 14 holes and not 18. The format changed soon after.
Jeff "The Big Easy" Erickson hasn't been going for as long as some others, but he has made his presence known, helping the "Red Team" claw out a victory in 2021. Almost winning the 1st (and last) ever Desert Classic "Dance Off", Ha Ha always brings his infectious laugh and energy to the classic. He never fails to amuse and entertain the masses. He was interviewed at the last classic about his dancing performance and his disappointment on not winning he quipped "I can dance circles around the Doc! He must have bribed the judges because there is no way he could have outdanced me!" He then went on to laugh for the next five minutes, and the interviewer left.
Jason "The Wine Expert" Craig, most famous for winning the first three Desert Classic Wine contests in a row. The third win actually pushed the Green Team past the Burgandy Team (now the Gray Team) with the bonus points they received for the best wine. He helped to create one of the biggest controversies in Desert Classic history. The Green Team went on the to victory and called the Burgandy Team "winers".
Chris "Vargie" Vargus, is one of the most liked players at the classic. He is always up for fun and games. He was asked about his performance against his rival "CJ" Regan and how he lost after guaranteeing a victory, Vargie replied "Where's the bar? I am ready for another Tequilia!" the reporter followed up with a question asking him why he was avoiding the question, to which Vargie replied "What question? Do you want a shot of Patron?" The interview ended.

DR has won the Cactus Cup several times, though it has been a while since the last victory.
Morgan "The Fuss" Fussell, Jr. played in the very first Desert Classic. The Fuss has not only won several Cactus Cups, he was selected as the Gerry Layo MVP in 2021, helping to bring the Red Team yet another victory.
Tom "TOMMY C" Cologna is a long-time member of the Desert Classic team. He is the definition of "class act" and a great guy. It wouldn't be the same Desert Classic without TOMMY C.
Mark "THE DOC" Debruin has been going to almost every Desert Classic and has won several Cactus Cups. He is the winner of the 2022 Desert Classic Dance Off and his name is on several Cactus Cup victories. He brings energy and life to the Classic year after year. When he was asked why he had missed the previous five Desert Classics he said, "Let's just say I served my time, and I am BACK!" the reporter followed up and asked if he thinks he will have to serve time in the future, the Doc replied "Trust me brother, the next sentence will be the death penalty - so I hope not!"
Todd "TJ" Johnson is in the Desert Classic Hall of Fame. He is one of the best guys in the entire tournament. He is the captain of the Charcoal Team and longtime player. He has helped make this a great event year after year. He is a crowd favorite as well.

Gary "GWIZ" Johnson has played in more than 12 Desert Classics! He has his name etched all over the Cactus Cup, being on the RED TEAM since its formation it's not a surprise. GWIZ is assistant captain for the Red Team and has helped in the team drafts. When asked about his success in the Desert Classics, GWIZ smugly responded "I don't know, I guess I am just that good!" the reporter replied, "Are you being sarcastic?" to which GWIZ replied "Look at the trophy, it will answer that question!"
Bret "BUCK" Petersen has been going to the Desert Classic for so long we can't keep track! He is a great guy and very competitive. Will "Fitz" Fitzpatrick has gone to nearly as many Desert Classic's as Buck, but he has quickly become a fan favorite, especially on Tean Black! He has been in charge of getting all the gear for his team, and they love it & him!
Dave "Super D" Kindelt has played in lots of Desert Classics and is known as a tough competitor. Though he has missed a couple here and there for family obligations, he will be back again soon. He and his son Karson won the first ever "Summer Classic" in 2021.
Jason "COS" Cosby is probably best known for holing out his approach shot from about 150 yards during the 2020 Desert Classic Shoot-Out! Helping the Red Team claim yet another Cactus Cup. Darren "The DH" Horning, Cos's team-mate helped bring home a victory that year as well. Darren has been going to the Classic for years now and is always a fun, generous and great guy!
Ralph "Ralphy" Stoneking has been going to the Desert Classic since the 90's! In recent years he has had to miss due to a work conflict.
He is seen here with one of the original Desert Classic players, Morgan "The Fuss" Fussell after they won the tournament back when it was 2-man competition.
Patrick "Paddy-G" Gainer was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He was a class-act and a true gentleman. He recently passed and will never be forgotten by his friends from the Classic.
Ryan "Tin-Man" Tinney is probably in the top 5 of the funnest guys of all-time. Tin-Man will make you laugh and will brighten your day. He has quickly become a DC Die-hard!
Erik "PILO" Pilegaard, a.k.a "The Big Dog", "E" and other names not suitable for this site, lol, has gone to several Desert Classics. He often calls in during the awards banquet when he cannot attend. Maybe someday soon PILO will be back, though he is a very busy guy and is usually cruising in the Mediterranean somewhere.
Gil "GVAN" Van Attenhoven is on his way to becoming a Desert Classic legend! Sinking the winning putt for the Red Team in 2020 he has solidified himself as a "clutch" player! He was even referred to as Gil "Van-Clutch" after the win and has his name forever etched in history on the Cactus Cup. G-Van sets an example for some of the younger Classic players, by showing them how to win with humility and grace. Something he has brought to team that may have been lacking a little of this quality.
Richie "Chicago-Richie" Sexton travels from the mid-west to play in the Desert Classic. Just outside of Chicago, Richie makes the long flight to be a part of this incredible event. He helped the Charcoal Team to a second-place finish in the 2022 Desert Classic. Chicago-Richie is a crafty competitor, just when you think you have him beat, he proves otherwise, points behind in two of his three matches last year, Chicago Richie came back and won, making his captain and team-mates very happy.
Pete "EVER-LEDDY" Leddy has played in five Desert Classics in a row heading into 2023. He was the LAYO MVP selection for 2022, getting the most points for his team. When his Captain "Nagz" was asked why "EVER-LEDDY" for the Gerry Layo MVP award, Nagz replied "The stats don't lie!" and went on to say "No one was more surprised than me. He had one of his best performances of the year this Classic, in fact probably his best performance EVER!" Pete will be presented the prestigious trophy and honor at the upcoming 2023 Desert Classic at the Annual Awards dinner. When asked if he thinks he can do it again this year, EVER-LEDDY profoundly replied, "Why not?" His captain Nagz had no further comments.
Kevin "JARV" Jarvis made history in 2022 by becoming only the 3rd player ever to get a hole-in-one during the Desert Classic! He did so playing with his captain Steve "McFly" McFarland. After he made the ace and McFly hit his tee shot awry in the "Combined Score Match play" format, he was quoted as saying "We haven't won this hole yet McFly, I can't do much better on this hole." They did win the hole barely with a score of 5 vs 6. JARV hopes 2023 is the Black Team's year and doesn't get the sophomore jynx.
John "JB" Bierer is the captain of the Navy Team. After playing and representing team Navy as an assistant captain for a couple of years under the tutelage of Eddie "Tempker" Kempker, he took over in 2020. He led his team to the highest point total in 2021, only to go out in the shoot-out with a couple of questionable shoot-out selections. Many questioned why he assigned Ryan "Ryno" Miller to be the designated putter- when he was the long-drive champion during the previous Mac Cup. Perhaps an even more questionable selection was the player selected for an iron shot, he blew into the desert on the approach which led to a 2nd place finish. JB has learned from this and vows to redeem himself.
Scott "BEEK" Vanderbeek is a long time Desert Classic player. He has his named on the Cactus Cup when he was on the red team. He has since moved on to the Orange Team where he was the assistant captain last year. With the absence of the captain Dennis "D-Will" Williams, he has taken over the reins for 2023. Beek has appointed Kevin "The GM" Marshal to assistant captain along with Eric "EMAC" McIntosh. They went out early in last year's shoot-out but are looking to take 2023 deep.
Steve "BIG CAT" Carroll and Ryan "RYNO" Miller are two Desert Classic "classics"! Big Cat has played in many DC's going as far back as the late 90's. Ryno has played in several, and probably the most memorable being the 2019 Classic, when he won the Gerry Layo MVP Award! Both guys are not playing this year but hope to be back in the next Classic! We will miss them!
Trever "TJ JR" Johnson went from a virtual unknown to a Desert Classic star. Leading his team with the most points in 2022 and helping his dad manage the Charcoal Team as assistant captain he has proven himself. He is one of 12 sons that will be attending the Desert Classic in 20223 to play with their father. Trever wants to get his name on the Cactus Cup this year so bad, he vowed to practice more to help bring home the coveted trophy.
Rick "RJ" Jordan is fairly new to the Desert Classic, but you would never know it. He won rookie of the year in 2021 and is hoping to add additional hardware to his treasure chest. RJ is a key member of the Black Team and when asked what he thinks their odds of winning the cup in 2023 were he replied "If Vegas had odds on the Black Team this year, I'd be holding a winning ticket when this thing is over. In other words, don't bet against the Black boyz!" To which his sidekick and fellow team member so eloquently added "True dat!" Only time will tell if this year the "black cloud" with be lifted.
Justin "HA HA JR" Long has been playing in the classic since he was able to have his first cocktail. A dangerous player that can go low on any given day, Ha Ha Jr. is ready to get the Navy team back into contention. When asked what drives him to play so well when needed he was quoted as saying "When your dad is Ha Ha, the Marlborough doesn't fall far from the pack. I will smoke the competition!"
Carson "CMAC" McMurtry and Jim "JR" Reis are newer to the Desert Classic but fast becoming a fixture. CMAC was not able to attend the 2023 Desert Classic due to a scheduling conflict but he vows to return in 2024. JR was part of the winning team in 2022. Playing for the Gray Team, he was anything but dull on the course winning his match to help secure a position in the shoot-out. When asked how he approaches each day of the classic he answered, "With a spicy bloody and spicier putter!"
. Eric "EMAC" McIntosh survived his rookie year at the 27th Annual Desert Classic. He helped his team by making lots of birdies and getting into the shoot-out. He was promoted to assistant captain after just one year on the Orange Team. When asked how he felt about the appointment he replied, "It is a great honor when your team puts their trust in you. I know I can help with the team challenge selections because I know who the baggers and Hollywood's are. I can't wait until the Orange Team "crushes" the other teams chances!"
Tyler "GWIZ JR" Johnson has played in the last two Desert Classics. Known for hitting a long ball and having a great touch around the greens, he helped the Charcoal Team get a second-place finish in the Desert Classic Shoot-Out. GWIZ JR was asked what he thinks it takes to win the Cactus Cup, he quipped, "Hit fairways and make putts!" He was then asked if getting a good night's sleep would help- to which he replied "I don't see that as a factor, at least not for me."
Jeff "HOLLAND" Holland has been attending Desert Classic's off and on for years! He has held his own and has a winning record over-all! He missed the previous two Classic's and when asked about his return in 2023 he commented "I am back! I am back and I hope to never miss another!"
Curt "LEW" Lewis is back in 2023 after missing the past three years. He had other commitments apparently, but hard to understand what could be worth missing a Classic for? Nonetheless, he is returning to play for the defending champs, the Gray Team. When asked why Nagz drafted LEW in this year's supplemental draft, Nagz replied "He was the only guy left on the board!", then quickly added "I'm kidding, I love his game and the way he wears his uniform, he should bring something to the table that we lost when Talbot vacated the spot. And he definitely wasn't the last guy left on the board- I won't say who that was."
Kevin "The GM" Marshal had a successful rookie year in 2022. He helped lead his team to the shoot-out. He was selected as the first "iron" player for his team. They started on the tough par three #14 and the pin was in the back. The tee shot went long into the deep back bunker. The GM had a tough shot to get it to a close pin with a tough lie. Unfortunately, the ball was struck a little thin and it flew the green. The short version is they went out on #14 in the shoot-out, something that haunts The GM to this day. When asked what will be different in 2023, he replied, "We will be in the shoot-out again and we will definitely go further than we did in '22. In fact, I think we may win it all." We will see.
Steve "SANDMAN" Sanders has been going to Desert Classics for years now. He regrets missing the 2020 "Covid Classic" as he was exposed to covid and thought it best that he skipped that year. Augusto swept in and grabbed the spot that year, the year after it was "enter the Sandman". Sandman helped lead the way for the White Team to make their first ever team shoot-out. When asked how he played he simply replied, "Good." When asked how his "sand" game was he replied, "Good." Finally, when asked how his team did in the shoot-out, he replied, "NO GOOD!"
Wyatt "NAGZ JR" Nagler, kicked off his rookie year with a bang! He and his playing partner EVER-LEDDY scored the most points on Friday to qualify for the two-man shoot-out. They kept getting by each hole and made it to the final hole with a chance to win. Needless to say, they just missed out in a chip-off to JP & CLINT. Wyatt went on to score the 2nd most points for the Champion Gray Team. Wyatt unfortunately had booked an early flight out and missed the shoot-out and the celebration. He vowed to be back in 2023 and will not make the same mistake again, he will be there for the shoot-out.
Doug "DVO" Vanorder, Clint "CLINT" Buytenhuys and Jim "Sparky" Clark are all fairly new to the Classic. Clint was playing in his 2nd but missed 2021. DVO & Sparky were rookies. DVO represented TEAM ORANGE for his first Dc and Sparky was Clints teammate on TEAM LIGHT BLUE. They are all returning and hoping for better results in the 2023 Desert Classic.
Nick "Khan-Man" Khan has also been going to the Desert Classic for close to ten years now! He was primarily a player Red Team player and has his name forever etched on the Cactus Cup trophy. He is the newest captain and youngest captain in the 2023 Desert Classic. He will be leading the GOLD TEAM to their first ever Classic. He feels he has a solid team and wants to pull maybe the biggest surprise upset in Desert Classic history with a victory. When asked how can you do this? Khan-Man replied, "It's like Bitcoin, no one thought it would rise to the sky like it did. We will be like crypto and take the cup!"
Ryan "RYNO" Miller (formerly known as RM), will not be attending the Desert Classic in 2023 as he is expecting a baby-boy. RYNO is the first LAYO MVP winner after leading the Navy Team to a Desert Classic victory at Torrey Pines. Ryno was also the designated "putter" in the 2021 Shoot-out and made every putt that was needed to be made. RYNO is hoping his son will someday play in the 48th Annual Desert Classic.
Curt "CUJO" Judd has been playing in the Desert Classic for more than 10 years! He was a member of the Navy Team and Red Team when they won the Cactus Cup. He is now on the Purple Team, drafted early by the DOC. Last year they went pretty far in the shoot-out, but unfortunately CUJO hit an errant approach shot that probably cost them a trip to the final hole. CUJO's teammates didn't blame him for the shank, they realized the amount of pressure that was placed on him in such a huge moment. CUJO will redeem himself in 2023 he said, he said he has learned from his mistake and is ready!
Brian "LANNY" Lancaster is entering his sophomore season for Team Charcoal. LANNY has played in many Mac Cups with his longtime friend JUNIOR. When LANNY was asked what he thought about his first ever Desert Classic experience he said, "I was thoroughly impressed, and I am definitely ALL IN for next year!" A fun fact about LANNY, he once drank three beers in less than 5 minutes.
Jim "SEWELLY" Sewell was the purple teams first draft pick in 2021. The DOC was asked why he selected SEWELLY, and he replied, "Because I'm the DOCTOR and I did my homework. SEWELLY can beat any chop that he faces!" When SEWELLY was asked what he thought about being selected by the Purple Team he replied, "No comment." The Purple Team surprised almost everyone with their stellar performance in the Classic. They were the 3rd most points and took third place over-all. SEWELLY questioned his captain's decision to use him as the wild card in the shootout and then to never use him. In one word SEWELLY merely said "Baffling."
Kevin "POGO" Pogue was a Desert Classic rookie in 2022. Though he had been invited several times over the past 6 years he did not pull the trigger until last year. When asked why he remarked, "To be quite honest I was simply scared." POGO helped take his Gray Team to the shoot-out and then on to the championship. POGO did say "Now that I have experienced the Classic for myself, I regret not going sooner. In fact, it very well maybe the biggest regret of my life. Well, that and the time I bought 1000 shares of Apple in 1999 for .78 cents a share and sold them in 2000 for $1.30." (For the record those shares would have been worth 5.1 million)
Jon "MOMO" Morrissey is relatively new to the Desert Classic, but the Charcoal Team is glad he decided to play. Captain TJ was asked what makes MOMO special? TJ answered, "I believe he can play at the highest level if he didn't have to work. I believe he brings something to this team in addition to boyish charm, he has game!"
Chris "BOOGIE" Beloberk has attended three Desert Classics and will be back for his fourth. A member of the Charcoal Team he has made a big impact on getting them to the final hole. BOOGIE was probably going to be in the running for the LAYO MVP had they pulled off the victory. 2023 will be a year of redemption for Team Charcoal, as they were one putt away from victory!
Bruce "COOP" Cooper and Kevin "COSTA" Costa are two long-time DC players. They have both been attending for many years and have played for different teams. COSTA was not able to attend the 28th Annual Desert Classic due to "personal reasons". He hopes to make a return someday soon. COOP who has a place in Scottsdale will be back with the NAVY TEAM this year.
Bill "HAGZ" Hagman has been going to the Desert Classic for several years now. He unfortunately needed to pull out of the 28th Annual Desert Classic due to personal reasons. He was a member of the BLACK TEAM. He had vowed that he will return in 2024. HAGZ is a winner of the Mac Cup. When asked how it felt to win the Mac, he answered, "It was incredible, and I am very proud of the win. If I can only win the Desert Classic and get my name on the Cactus Cup my golf life would be complete. The Desert Classic is like the Ryder Cup to the PGA tour, only harder to win. I won't quit until the name "HAGZ" is on that cup!"
CJ "CJ" Regan was a Desert Classic rookie in 2022. He was on the Charcoal Team, and they took a respectable second place. He was most proud of his victory over "RJ" & "VARGIE" on day two last year. He said that they "trashed talked" him so much prior to the match. CJ instead of being their "pigeon" crushed their hopes and dreams of making the shoot-out with the Balck Team. It may have been one the most critical matches of the entire day, sending the black team back to the bottom of the field.
Wally "WALLY" Douglas was a rookie, and he won his first Desert Classic. WALLY who had never played in a Desert Classic before, helped his team make it to the shoot out and win. When asked what is felt like to see your name inscribed on the coveted Cactus Cup trophy WALLY responded, "It was something I dreamed about since I was a new member of the club. I never thought this would happen to a guy like me. I would sleep with that cup if I could, it is magnificent!"
Paul "PAULY" McElhaney has played in two Desert Classics and is looking forward to his third. He is a member of the White Team, aka "The Dirty White Boyz", a name their captain coined years ago. Helping the team make it to their first ever shoot-out was exciting but short-lived. The white team made an early exit and was knocked out on the first "play in" hole. PAULY was asked what happened, he responded, "Bad golf happened, case closed."
Chucky "Chucky P" Peterson is a Desert Classic living legend. Pictured with the founder, Steve "McFly" McFarland when they were partners for four consecutive years. There was no player greater than Chucky P when it came to getting up for a 7 am tee time after a night out on the town. Chucky P won the Desert Classic in 1998 with partner and two-time winner Larry "The King" Simon.
This is a picture from the 1998 Desert Classic. From left to right, Bill "Snappy" Petersen, Clyde "The Glide" Colley, Dave "DR" Rodgers, Javier "Javie C" Vandesteeg, Roger "Rog" Staples, Bob "Bobby S" Sekora, and Larry "The King" Simon. The Stadium Course, Palm Desert, CA.
